NHL Eastern Conference round one preview

NHL Eastern Conference round one preview

Which teams will come out victorious?

By Ryan Mosher

BOSTON (April 18, 2024) The puck will drop on round one of the NHL Playoffs this Saturday April 20 when the New York Islanders visit the Carolina Hurricanes. The other three matchups in the Eastern Conference have also been decided and they will showcase the premier rivalries that the NHL has to offer.

The Hurricanes and Islanders will meet as the second and third seeded teams from the Metropolitan Division. The Hurricanes have the Islanders outmatched on offense and on defense. Carolina possesses the fourth best defense and eighth best offense in the league based on goals per game, while the Islanders rank No.18 and No.22 respectively.

The Islanders will need goaltender Ilya Sorokin to return to his from last season if they are to come out victorious. The Hurricanes will win the series in five games.

The Boston Bruins versus the Toronto Maple Leafs is the other series that will get started on Saturday. The two Original Six franchises have met in the playoffs 16 times, with each claiming the series win eight times. The Bruins have won the last three playoff meetings in 2013, 2018 and 2019, all in seven games.

The B’s won all four regular season matchups with the Maple Leafs but are entering playoffs after two uninspiring losses to the Washington Capitals and Ottawa Senators. However, the Maple Leafs have lost three straight games to end the season.

All eyes will be on David Pastrnak and Auston Mattews, but goalie performance will determine the outcome of the series. Ultimately, the Bruins have the edge in that department and will beat Toronto in game seven for the fourth straight time.

The Presidents Trophy winning New York Rangers will take on the Washington Capitals, who have a -37-goal differential, the worst in NHL history for a team that made the playoffs.

The Rangers’ Artemi Panarin finished fourth in the NHL in total points with 120, and defenseman Adam Fox finished with 73 points in 72 games, more than Dylan Strome who led the Capitals with 67 points. The Rangers will sweep the Capitals in four games.

The final first round series in the Eastern Conference is the Florida Panthers versus the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Panthers claimed the Atlantic Division title when they beat the Maple Leafs in the final game of the season.

The Panthers have six players that scored at least 20 goals this season, including Sam Reinhart who scored 57. However, they will rely on their No.1 ranked defense to stop the Art Ross winner and possible Hart Trophy winner Nikita Kucherov, who amassed 144 points. The Battle of Florida will be decided in game seven, where the Lightning will walk away victorious.

NHL Western Conference round one preview

NHL Western Conference round one preview

Who will advance to the second round?

By Ryan Mosher

VEGAS (April 16, 2024) The NHL playoffs will start on Saturday April 20 and while all eight Western Conference spots have been filled, only one matchup has been determined thus far. The confirmed matchup is between the Winnipeg Jets and the Colorado Avalanche.

The Jets lead the Avalanche for second place in the Central Division by one point with Winnipeg having two games remaining and the Avs with one.

The Jets will most likely claim home-ice advantage as they play the Vancouver Canucks, who are one point away from clinching the Pacific Division and the Seattle Kraken, who have already been eliminated from playoff contention.

This series will be a battle of the No.1 ranked offense against the No.1 ranked defense. Nathan MacKinnon, Miko Rantanen and Cale Makar power Colorado’s offense that averages 3.67 goals per game. Connor Hellebuyck is the favorite to win the Veniza Trophy, the NHL’s best goalie, as he anchors the Jets defense that only allows 2.41 goals per game.

Ultimately, home-ice advantage, Hellebuyck and timely scoring from Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor will help the Jets win the series in seven games.

The Dallas Stars have clinched the No.1 seed in the Western Conference. They will play either the defending champion Vegas Golden Knights or the stingy Los Angeles Kings.

Dallas will have a tough matchup regardless of which team they play, but I believe they will win either series. The Stars have the best four-line forward lineup in the NHL. If the Stars play the Golden Knights and Mark Stone is healthy, then the series could go seven games. If not, Dallas beats Vegas or L.A. in five or six games.

The Vancouver Canucks need one point against the Calgary Flames or the Jets to claim the Pacific Division crown. If they do so, they will most likely play the Nashville Predators, but there is an outside chance they play the Golden Knights.

This will be the first time the Canucks see playoff action since the 2020 NHL postseason. Vancouver has made great progress with at least 107 points this season, a 24-point increase from last season. However, I believe the Canucks will be upset in the first round regardless of who they play, because of their lack of playoff inexperience.

The last series in the Western Conference features the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers had a slow start to the season, so they fired their Head Coach, Jay Woodcroft. Kris Knoblauch took over for Woodcroft and the Oilers have collected 46 wins and only 21 losses to finish the season.

The Oilers will play the Kings or Golden Knights in the first round. With Connor McDavid earning the first 100 assist season since Wanye Gretzky had 122 assists with the Kings in the 1990-91 season, and Leon Draisaitl, the Oilers have too much firepower on offense to lose in the first round.

Mercyhurst University making the transition to Division Ⅰ

Mercyhurst University makes a shocking announcement to transition to Division Ⅰ athletics

By Ryan Mosher

ERIE, Pa. (April 14, 2024) Mercyhurst University announced on April 4 that they will be leaving the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) on July 1, the start of the new academic year, to make the transition to Division Ⅰ, playing in the Northeast Conference (NEC).

Mercyhurst are not complete strangers to the top level of collegiate athletics. The Lakers men’s and women’s ice hockey programs have played at the Division Ⅰ level since the 1999-2000 season. The men’s team has made the NCAA tournament three times, while the women have made 14 appearances, even making the Frozen Four on four separate occasions.

Dr. Robert Zullo spoke on the matter. Zullo has worked in sports marketing for the University of North Carolina and Virginia Tech athletic departments, as well as in athletic administration at the University of Georgia.

“They have been successful and competitive in Division Ⅰ level hockey, but that is just one sport. Now you are moving up for men’s and women’s basketball, football, all of the sports. You are recruiting a different type of student athlete who could get a potential full ride from other schools,” Zullo said.

One of the biggest reasons why Mercyhurst made the jump was to boost their enrollment and finances. Mercyhurst has only 2,801 total students, with 2,446 of them being undergraduates. In the introductory press conference on April 4, 2024, Mercyhurst University President Kathleen A. Getz said “We considered an array of perspectives in the ever-changing field of higher education, including effects on enrollment, retention, student-life, university finances, alumni engagement and local economic development.”

In 2019, Mercyhurst implemented a plan around the William Vorsheck Jr. Athletic Complex, where they renovated every on-campus competition facility, including four new locker rooms and a new turf field with lights.

“They have made renovations in recent years that will really help with enrollment and help with recruitment, so they feel like they are strong in that area,” Zullo said.

Mercyhurst will have an edge on schools in the surrounding area when it comes to their athletic facilities and they must use this advantage when marketing to students, donors and sponsors.

“I think the approach they will take from a marketing standpoint is they will tout themselves as the only Division Ⅰ option in Erie, and a lot of times we overlook how big Erie is relative to places like Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Buffalo. Erie is still a substantial community in terms of size, so that is the approach I think they are going to say is there is still Gannon and that is Division Ⅱ, but now we are Division Ⅰ,” Zullo said.

The Erie population is over 94,000 and 11.6% are of the ages 18-24, the age of the common college student. Mercyhurst will need to dominate that area to help build their enrollment.

While finances are most likely one of the biggest reasons that Mercyhurst is transitioning, it will also be one of their biggest challenges at the next level.

“Where they are going to have some challenges with finances is instead of their opponents being in a proximity of an easy bus trip, you are going to start to see more overnight trips and that will increase hotel expenditures across all of the teams. You might have to have some flights as well to play in places like Chicago. It is much easier to get to Erie down to IUP than it is to get from Erie over to a metropolitan area,” Zullo said.

Zullo believes that Mercyhurst will be facing an uphill battle in more than just athletics.

“It also is going to have some increases in finances with respect to scholarships, so they need to account for that. Not just for the initial year, but every year there after to make sure they are giving the coaches the resources they need to recruit people who can compete at that level,” Zullo said.

Mercyhurst will most likely struggle to recruit outside of Erie and the surrounding area because their competition will now have a larger pool of resources to use, especially with Name, Image and Likeness.

“If you are a student athlete and Pittsburgh University is recruiting you and Mercyhurst is recruiting you, then Pitt is going to win. Even if Duquesne University and Mercyhurst are recruiting you, Duquesne is in the city with more resources, and they are going to win,” Zullo said.

Mercyhurst will also not have the media attention that even mid-major school receive.

“You can tell that player that they are going to be on ESPN+, you are not going to be on ESPN2. ESPNU, ESPN Classic or ESPN. But my question would be what is the difference between playing on ESPN+ and a school’s livestream on their website? I do not think the revenue that they are going to make on ESPN+ is going to be so substantial,” Zullo said.

Mercyhurst was founded in 1926 by the Sisters of Mercy of the Erie Catholic Diocese. They also just got promoted to a university from a college in 2012. This shows that they are a relatively new school and do not have the history of high salary programs that their competition does.

This limits the size and quality of their pool of donors.

“You have other schools that have MBA programs, medical schools, law schools and engineering schools. They are graduating people with higher salaries, and they have been doing it for a longer period of time. Mercyhurst will essentially be playing catch up and that is going to be very challenging,” Zullo said.

Although the donors may not give as much as those at larger schools, they are still imperative to the growth of Mercyhurst as a university and their athletic program.

“Sometimes it can be donor influenced… at the end of the day, the donors are still the ones writing the checks for the chemistry building, the new dorms and the student union, so sometimes you have to work and go with them,” Zullo said.

Eastern Conference playoff push

Eastern Conference playoff push

Penguins recent surge has placed them back in the wildcard hunt along with four other teams

By Ryan Mosher

PITTSBURGH (April 4, 2024) There are two weeks left until the NHL regular season concludes and there are still four teams fighting for the final wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference. The last Metropolitan division playoff spot is up for grabs as well.

The Washington Capitals currently hold the final wildcard spot with 82 points, and they have eight games remaining.

The Pittsburgh Penguins looked like they were giving up on the season when they traded away Jake Guentzel to the Carolina Hurricanes at the trade deadline, but after securing 15 of their next 28 possible points, the Penguins find themselves just three points out of a playoff spot.

The key to the Penguins resurgence has been staying afloat. The Philadelphia Flyers, who currently hold onto the final Metropolitan playoff spot by one point, have lost their last six games and have been trending downward for the entire second half of the season.

It will still be a tall task for the Penguins to reach the postseason because of their remaining schedule. Six of the Penguins’ final seven games will be against teams currently in a playoff position. Conversely, the Capitals and Flyers only play four and two current playoff teams respectively to round out their regular season.

On the upside for the Penguins, they have games against the Capitals, Detroit Red Wings and New York Islanders, three of the teams which they are fighting for the wildcard spot.

The Red Wings are tied with the Capitals with 82 points, but are behind Washington in the first tiebreaker, which is regulation wins. The Islanders sit one point back from the Capitals and Red Wings.

The Capitals have one more game remaining than the other teams in the wildcard race, which could be the deciding factor in making the playoffs.

While the Columbus Blue Jackets are the only Eastern Conference team eliminated from the playoffs, the Capitals, Flyers, Red Wings, Islanders and Penguins are the only teams with a realistic chance of claiming the final two playoff spots.
